As part of the "Celebrate Life!" project prominent figures from the realms of art and culture were invited to engage in a dialog in aid of the Caritas Hospice: What remains of us when we have gone? What is important to us knowing that life is finite? What traces do we leave? How do I wish to die? Barbara Coudenhove-Kalergi, Christiane Horbiger, Karl Markovics, Robert Menasse, Cornelius Obonya, Arnulf Rainer, Barbara Stockl, Michael Landau, and Josef Zotter all agreed to have a "life mask" made of their faces. Subsequently, renowned international artists Daniel Knorr, Erik van Lieshout, Teresa Margolles, Arnulf Rainer, Hans Schabus, Hubert Scheibl, Deborah Sengl, Daniel Spoerri, Kader Attia, and Nives Widauer put their artistic touches to the masks. The book documents the one-off exhibition of the masks in the of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Antiques Collection.
About the author
Robert Menasse wurde am 21. Juni 1954 in Wien geboren. Menasse studierte in Wien, Salzburg und Messina Germanistik, Philosophie und Politikwissenschaft und promovierte 1980. Von 1981 bis 1988 arbeitete er an der Universität Sao Paulo in Brasilien als Assistent am Institut für Literaturtheorie. Seither ist der Schriftsteller und Essayist als freier Publizist tätig. 1990 wurde Robert Menasse als erster mit dem "Heimito-von-Doderer-Preis" ausgezeichnet. Der Schriftsteller, der auch als Übersetzer aus dem brasilianischen Portugiesisch arbeitet, lebt in Wien und Amsterdam. 2002 wurde er mit dem "Friedrich-Hölderlin-Preis", dem "Marie-Luise-Kaschnitz-Preis" und dem "Lion-Feuchtwanger-Preis" sowie 2003 mit dem "Erich-Fried-Preis" ausgezeichnet. 2012 wurde Robert Menasse der "Donauland-Sachbuchpreis" verliehen und 2013 der "Heinrich-Mann-Preis" für Essayistik. Im Jahr 2014 erhielt er den "Max Frisch-Preis".
