Gender and perspective are the focus of this comparative study of Elfriede Jelinek's novel "Die Klavierspielerin" and Michael Haneke's film adaptation "La Pianiste", as well as Joachim Neugroschel's English translation "The Piano Teacher". Jelinek's political thought and feminist engagement are reviewed. German quotes are translated into English by the author. Brief considerations of feminist writing and gender are presented according to Butler, Bourdieu, Cixous, Irigaray, Lacan and Spivak. Jelinek's feminist writing, as well as her language and style, are analyzed. The aspect of gender in translation studies is illuminated according to Simon, Von Flotow, Eco and Venuti. Neugroschel's English translation of Jelinek's "Die Klavierspielerin" is examined, focusing on gender-relevant transformations. Changes in perspective in Haneke's "La Pianiste" are analyzed from the point of view of feminist film theory and with reference to relevant reviews and interviews. Haneke's German language screenplay is compared with the French dialogue of his film, as well as the English subtitles, to better understand how gender and perspective play a role in film adaptation, translation and interpretation.
