The Old Stone Fort at Nacogdoches, built in 1779 and torn down in 1902, began as a trading center but also served as a jail, capitol of governments, courthouse, lodge hall, meeting place, and saloon. A replica was reconstructed using the original materials, on the grounds of Stephen E Austin State University, during the Texas Centennial.

About the author










Archie P. McDonald was the author or editor of more than forty books and monographs. He lived in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he was a Regent's Professor of History and Community Liaison at Stephen F. Austin State University and a weekly commentator on Red River Radio.
