Born in 1940 in Toronto, Ontario, playwright James W. Nichol has written for radio, film, television and theatre since 1964. He has been Vice-President of Playwrights Canada and was playwright-in-residence at the National Art Centre when Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons (1980) was staged in 1977.

Summary

Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons is James W. Nichol’s play concerning the disastrous mission that the Jesuits made to the Huron Indians in the 17th century. The play is about the conscience of a priest who refuses to accept salvation of his soul through the destruction of a proud people.
