The Stoa of Attalos now covers the remains of several centuries of previous occupation: Mycenaean burials, houses, shops, and from the late 5th century, a succession of structures here associated with the Athenian lawcourts. The most imposing of these buildings was the Square Peristyle, still unfinished when it was dismantled in the first quarter of the 2nd century B.C. Because it is now largely limited to excavation finds and records, the evidence is reviewed here in detail.

Summary

The Stoa of Attalos now covers the remains of several centuries of previous occupation. The author's success in making a coherent and orderly presentation of the architectural history of the site rests on the care and diligence of the excavators as well as his own painstaking search through the records.
