About the author

Thomas H. Pope has practiced law in Newberry since 1938 except when in service during World War I. A Distinguished Military Graduate of The Citadel, he is a Brigadier General (ret.) in the South Carolina National Guard. He received LL.D. degrees from Newberry College in 1969 and from The Citadel in 1977. Former Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives and former member of the Archives and History Commission, he has been an officer in the South Carolina Historical Society and the University Caroliniana Society and president of the Newberry County Historical Society.
