This text is a workbook in etymology and vocabulary building from Latin and Greek elements. An introduction which gives a brief description of the foreign influence on English vocabulary is followed by exercises in spelling, usage, and the histories of words. The Latin and Greek sections introduce students to word formation in the classical tongues. Numerous exercises are included to practice the principles of compounding words and the word elements. The new edition adds fuller explanations and numerous vocabulary notes to show interesting relationships of words and word groups as well as more exercises and review material, based on feedback from students in the class during the last five years.
