Bushey, in the â ~Archive Photographsâ (TM) series, is a remarkable collection of over 200 old photographs of the ancient community of Bushey, covering the period from the 1860s to the 1960s: the time of the most radical changes in the townâ (TM)s long history. The book reflects Busheyâ (TM)s origins as an agricultural village, and charts its expansion with the coming of the railway and the growth of industry in and around Bushey Hall Road. It provides extensive coverage of the townâ (TM)s streets, shops, churches and schools, and illustrates the lives of such local celebrities as the painters Sir Hubert von Herkomer, RA, and Lucy Kemp-Welch. This photographic compilation is published in association with Bushey Museum and fills a major gap in the coverage of the townâ (TM)s unique history. The photographs are derived mainly from the author, Bryen Woodâ (TM)s, own collection and that of the Museum; very few of the images have appeared in print before.
About the author
BRYEN WOOD M.B.E. (1936-2009) was a well known local historian, one of the founding trustees of Bushey Museum and the first Director of the Museum.
