In the 1430''s, an elderly British woman named Margery Kempe dictated her memoirs to hired scribes. The result is considered the first autobiography written in English, and is also the tale of a remarkable woman who was not afraid to violate the social mores of the day in order to achieve her goals. Louise Collis tells the story of Margery Kempe in Memoirs of a Medieval Woman. In many ways, Margery was a typical middle-class woman of her time; married to a local merchant, she bore fourteen children. However, after the birth of her first child she experienced a spiritual awakening that would eventually send her on journeys throughout Europe and the Middle East. Memoirs of a Medieval Woman is more than a biography; it is a colorful and detailed portrait of daily life in the Middle Ages.
