Au début du XX^e siècle, le Népal est encore pratiquement interdit aux étrangers. Grâce à ses amitiés et à une connaissance subtile de l'âme orientale, Alexandra David-Néel parvient à y entreprendre le plus étonnant des voyages. Publié en 1949 mais longtemps demeuré introuvable, Au coeur des Himalayas relate le pèlerinage que « Jétsunema » (la « Dame-Lama ») effectua durant l'hiver 1912-1913 sur les lieux mêmes où vécut le Bouddha. Son récit éclaire une civilisation à la fois cruelle et mystique qui échappe à tous les critères d'analyse de la pensée occidentale. C'est une très riche leçon d'histoire humaine autant qu'une captivante expérience vécue.
