Summary

Public Speaking: A Meta-Communicative Approach provides an innovative approach to acquiring public speaking skills, stressing both the theoretical underpinnings as well as the practical tools one needs to structure and deliver meaningful, dynamic presentations. It offers alternative ways of looking at public speaking: the significance of passion; a prismatic-way-of-thinking; the pervasiveness of persuasion; the assumption that teaching is taking place in every presentation; the power of meta-messages; and overarching ways to look at the public speaking enterprise. This one-of-a-kind textbook also offers real-world scenarios to equip students for speaking engagements they may face in professional contexts.

Additional text

"This one-of-a-kind textbook provides a "behind the curtain" (meta-look) at effectively creating and delivering presentations in all academic and professional contexts. Myriad books on public speaking provide the "how", but Public Speaking: A Meta-Communicative Approach also provides the "why". This informative and logical textbook would be an excellent choice for any public speaking course. The GOING META, KEEPERS, CAVEATS, and DISCUSSION QUESTION sections are especially helpful for breaking down key concepts and providing important context."
-Steve Garwood, Assistant Dean for Instructional Technology, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey

"This book offers a novel approach to the study of public speaking. Presenting fresh perspectives on how best to master the key principles and practices of effective oral discourse, Professor Goldstein has created a text that will surely resonate with those looking for innovative and engaging instructional tools."
-Richard Kallan, Chair and Professor, Department of Communication, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
