During an official visit of Prime Minister Hun Sen to Japan in December 2013, Cambodia and Japan agreed to upgrade the bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. It is, therefore, believed that the effort of Japan to boost its ties with Cambodia is not a coincidence, whilst Cambodia's decision to establish its closer relations with Japan is also attached with reasons. Thus, this book seeks to investigate the reasons which include the factors and interests pushing the two countries to construct their strategic partnership. The factors include both regional and domestic factors, and the interests encompass political, strategic, social and economic dimensions. Moreover, the study will also rigorously examine the challenges hindering the progress of this partnership.
