Qu'est-ce qui, aujourd'hui, peut bien pousser un individu à marcher jour après jour et dans des conditions parfois difficiles vers le lieu présumé de l'inhumation de l'apôtre Jacques le Majeur ? Cette question, Jean-Claude Bourlès se la pose depuis des années qu'il sillonne les 1600 kilomètres d'un chemin prenant sa source au Puy-en-Velay. Dans ce livre, il interroge surtout les autres, les pèlerins mais aussi des témoins privilégiés : agriculteurs, commerçants, et tous ceux, laïcs ou religieux, qui voient se succéder les « passants de Compostelle » et parfois les accueillent dans les gîtes, auberges ou refuges qui jalonnent leur itinéraire.
À cinquante-six ans, Jean-Claude Bourlès, alors employé de bureau, décide de quitter sa vie rangée, pour se lancer sur la route de Compostelle. De ces pèlerinages, il tirera plusieurs récits, dont Retours à Conques et Le Grand Chemin de Compostelle.
