La lecture de Schopenhauer avait révélé au jeune Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) la pensée de l'Inde ; il s'attacha, dès lors, à trouver un point de convergence entre les visions du monde occidentale et hindoue, à concilier réalisme et éthique. « Nous devons tendre, écrit-il, vers une pensée plus profonde et plus puissante, plus riche en énergies morales et spirituelles, une pensée capable de s'emparer des hommes et des peuples et de s'imposer à eux. » En 1953, Albert Schweitzer a reçu le prix Nobel de la paix.
