Horton Foote, a little-known 20th-century American playwright, has received much recent acclaim, particularly for such screenplays as The Trip to Bountiful and Tender Mercies . This study scrutinizes all available Foote work, from the early one-acts of the 1940's through the latest plays of the 1980's. The single theme of family reconciliation that runs throughout his canon is highlighted.
