Eduardo Mendoza wurde am 11. Januar 1943 in Barcelona geboren. 1965 schloß er sein Jurastudium ab und arbeitete für kurze Zeit als Rechtsanwalt. Hierbei lernte er die juristisch-administrative Sprache kennen, die er später in einigen seiner Romane parodierte. Von 1973 bis 1982 war er in New York als Dolmetscher im Auftrag der Vereinten Nationen tätig. Im Jahr 2015 erhielt er den Franz-Kafka-Literaturpreis.
