This book provides the fundamentals of the application of mathematical methods, modern computational tools (Excel, Mathcad, SMath, etc.), and the Internet to solve the typical problems of heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, energy conservation and energy efficiency. Chapters cover the technology for creating and using databases on various properties of working fluids, coolants and thermal materials. All calculation methods are provided with links to online computational pages where data can be inserted and recalculated.

It discusses tasks involving the generation of electricity at thermal, nuclear, gas turbine and combined-cycle power plants, as well as processes of co- and trigeneration, conditioning facilities and heat pumps.

This text engages students and researchers by using modern calculation tools and the Internet for thermal engineering applications.

About the author

Professor Nikolay Rogalev is the Rector of the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” (NRU “MPEI”) and Head of the Thermal Power Plants department of the NRU “MPEI”.
Professor Valery Ochkov works at the Thermal Power Plants department of the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” and at the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS). He is an author of online calculations pages on the IAPWS-site with properties water and steam. It is the ideology of the world famous programs WaterSteamPro and cloud function with thermal physical properties of the working fluids of thermal and nuclear power. Professor Ochkov is the creator of the calculation server for engineers and designers working in the field of energy. He has worked for 15 years with the company PTC and is one of the leading online forum Planet PTC. He is author of more than 25 books and 200 journal and conferences publications in the field IT for Power Engineering.
Dr. Konstantin Orlov is at present an associate professor of the Thermal Power Plants department of the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” and senior researcher of the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He took B.Sc. in “Technical Sciences” and Eng. in “Thermal Power Plants” (2001) and a Ph.D. in “Thermal Power Plants, their energy systems and equipment” (2004) in Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Technical University). He is head of Russian National Committee of the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS). His research activity is related to the calculation of the properties of substances used in the field of power generation (he is responsible person for the WaterSteamPro software), modern computer approaches and information technologies for heat engineering calculations and computer simulation programs for water treatment on thermal power plants. He is author of more than 40 publications and present more than 30 reports for the conferences in the field of his research activities.

Dr. Volodymyr Voloshchuk has been involved in the application of Mathcad and its appendixes for calculations and analysis of thermal engineering processes for more than 12 years. In 2012 he held a fellowship granted by the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, working on elaboration of open interactive algorithms for thermophysical modeling of new types of power units (gas turbines, combined gas and steam turbines, etc.). Presently he is a postdoctoral researcher at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. His current research interests lie in the fields of modeling, optimizing and analyzing processes in HVAC components and system solutions. Hehas published about 10 papers in refereed international journals.
