En 1930, Agatha Christie, alors âgée de quarante ans et divorcée depuis peu, laisse provisoirement derrière elle sa chère Angleterre et une carrière littéraire déjà bien assise pour découvrir le site d'Our en Iraq. Elle a pour cicérone Max Mallowan, un archéologue de vingt-six ans qu'elle épouse quelques mois plus tard. Commence alors une vie de voyages à deux : cinq saisons de fouilles se succèdent jusqu'en 1939, qu'elle racontera plus tard, avec nostalgie, certes, mais surtout avec un humour inoxydable et un art consommé de l'autodérision. Ses pérégrinations lui inspireront d'ailleurs trois de ses livres les plus célèbres : Le Crime de l'Orient-Express, Meurtre en Mésopotamie et Mort sur le Nil.
