Excerpt from Dramatic Music (Class M 1500, 1510, 1520): Catalogue Of Full Scores
This catalogue represents the full scores of operas acquired by the Library of Congress in the interval between the reorganization of the Music Division in 1902, when the collection consisted only of about sixty full scores deposited for copyright, and Decem ber, 1907. Incidental music for dramas, melodramas, ballets, pantomimes and the typically English publications of Favour ite Songs have been included, though no special effort has yet been made to develop the collections in these directions. When the plans for a systematic development of the resources of the Music Division were carried into effect, opera immediately received a very considerable share of attention first, for reason of administrative convenience; second, because the peculiar condition of opera in the United States seemed to demand that a center of reference and research be created for the students of opera.
