The book entitled 'Physiology Of Rice Crop With Reference To Low Light' provides information on the effects of low light on both morphological and physiological changes in winter rice crop. The importance of solar radiation in triggering vegetative growth and reproductive development, and their role in determining grain yield of rice are elucidated in the book. The physiological attributes that enable the efficient rice genotype(s) for adaptations to low light, and the relationships of grain yield with some of the yield attributing parameters (e.g. dry matter, leaf areas, HI, nitrogen content)have been discussed. The book has a special reference to case studies in Assam, the province of North-east India. The wet season rice is characterized by its low sunshine hours, high temperature and high humidity. Further, from transplanting to maturity about 1500 light hours are required for rice, whereas in Assam condition during August to December only about 800-900 light hours are available, which not only hampers physiological efficiency but also renders nutritional imbalance by retarding nitrogen uptake. Low light acts as a stress, and determinant of rice productivity in the subtropics
