Excerpt from An Easy Introduction to Short Hand: In Which the Sounds of the English Language Are Analyzed and Expressed in a Rational Manner; Illustrated With Fifteen Plates
Desirous of acquiring the valuable and useful art of Short Hand, the author of the following 'essay consulted several treatises on the subject. Their variety perplexed him, and he knew not which tafix on. He found some general principles in which they all agreed: but some particular expedients in which they all difi'ered. He could not but consider the former as the true and genuine materials of a better and universal sys tem, which experience would, at some future time, bring to light: 'and the latter as so many incum brances which that better system, whenever it might appear,'would remove.
