Excerpt from Extracts From the Records of the Burgh of Edinburgh: A. D. 1557 1571
The Extracts from the Records of each Burgh will, as far as the Committee consider expedient, be issued separately, and without adhering to any prescribed order.
As affording a key to much that is to be found in the Records of the Burghs, and as generally illustrative of municipal institutions in Scotland, the Committee resolved to pub lish, in early volumes of the series, the Laws of Scotland relating to the Burghs, down to the accession of James VI. To the crown of England, and probably to the union of the two kingdoms. In pursuance of this design, they have already issued a volume containing the Laws of the Four Burghs, and the old Laws relating to the Burghs, from the earliest period of record till the return of James I. To Scotland in 1424. The editing of that work, and the preparation of the introductory historical sketch of the Burghs prefaced to it, were undertaken by the late Professor Cosmo innes, who also undertook the editing of the second volume, which was passing through the press at the time of his lamented death. The completion of this volume will be entrusted to a competent editor.
A volume of Extracts from the Oldest Records of the City of Edinburgh, extending from 1403 till 1528, and including all that is now known to exist of the burghal legis lation of the capital during that period, was delivered to the members during March, 1870. A second volume, containing Extracts from these Records, and Selections from the Accounts of the Treasurers and Deans of Guild of the City, down to 1556-7, was issued in December, 1871. A third volume, containing selections from the Records of the City till 1571, is now ready for issue; and a fourth, and probably concluding, volume, containing selections from the Accounts of the City, a general Preface, and Index of matters in the four volumes, is in preparation.
The Corporation of Edinburgh having authorized the transcription and printing, for its own purposes, of its oldest Charters and other muniments, was pleased to allow the Scottish Burgh Records Society to print 03 copies for the use of the members of the Society. That volume, containing Charters from 1143 to 1540, was delivered to the members in January, 1871. The preparation of a second volume has been authorized, and is in progress.
