Excerpt from Determination of Radicles in Carbon Compounds
The success of the German edition of Dr. Meyer's book was only one of the reasons that led to the prep aration of this translation. The quantitative side of organic chemistry, apart from elementary analysis, is almost always neglected in the ordinary courses of in struction, and when the need for it arises, in the pros ecution of research work for instance, it is di¿'icult to obtain a comprehensive view of the methods which are available without undue expenditure of time. This little work supplies, for the first time, a systematic treatment of these methods which, it is hoped, may help to remove this drawback and may also encour age the introduction of some quantitative work into the college courses of organic preparations, since such a departure could scarcely fail to be beneficial in various ways to the student. From the translator's experience with the German edition he believes that the present one will be serviceable to instructors and senior students of organic chemistry. Considerable care has been bestowed on the proof-sheets, and it is hoped that the errors which may have escaped notice are not too glaring.
