Excerpt from A Brief Account of the Life, Writings, and Inventions of Sir Samuel Morland: Master of Mechanics to Charles the Second

Samuel morland was the son of the Rev. Thomas Morland, of sulhamstead-bannister, near Reading in Berkshire, and born somewhere about the year 1625, as we learn from the preface to his Urim of Conscience, published in 1695, where he says that he had then passed the seventieth year of his age.

Little is known of his early life except that he was educated at Winchester school, whence he removed to the University of Cambridge, and, according to Cole,' to Magdalen College, where he became acquainted with Bishop Cumberland. He remained at Cambridge for nearly ten years, but never took any degree, and the probability is that his University career was very unprofitable.
