Excerpt from The Nation and the Kingdom: Annual Sermon Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions

This is part of a fervent apostrophe to the nation as the servant of Jehovah, that ideal in which was concentrated the hopes of the great unknown prophet of the exile. What kindles his expectation is his vision of a regenerated society, a society from which injustice and oppression and misery and want and all iniquity and wrong shall be put away; in which peace and good will shall abide and order and security shall reign. The prophet represents Jehovah as pledging his pro tection and care to this holy nation, this peculiar people; they are indeed, to represent him; it is through them that he is to be made known in the earth and therefore all his resources are at their disposal to enrich them and defend them, and crown them with his benediction. Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, desolation nor destruction within thy bor ders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation and thy gates praise.
