Neuralgias of Head & Neck

Neuralgia is defined as"neuropathic pain felt along the peripheral distribution of a nerve trunk".Neuropathic pain refers to pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system.It is due to an abnormality in components of the nervous system itself rather than to noxious stimulation of otherwise normal neural structures as with superficial and deep somatic pain disorders. Neuropathic pain conditions are frequently associated with qualities with which the patient is not familiar.One of the responsibilities of the dentist is the diagnosis and treatment of pain involving oral and paraoral structures.Although many of the cases of pain that confront him are directly associated with the teeth, others arise from diseases of nerves themselves and thus are not closely connected with the teeth.
