Insulin, a hormone secreted by the beta cells of pancreas allows the body to use the sugar content in food that we eat for energy as well as store glucose for future use thereby maintaining the blood sugar level. In Diabetes mellitus, pancreas no longer produces adequate insulin or cells become resistant to the insulin that is produced, leading to hyperglycemia condition in humans. Spirulina, is a naturally occurring fresh water Cyanobacteriuum and is enriched with proteins and essential nutrients. In this report, we studied for a herbal source of Insulin from Spirulina, as it contains the highest concentration of protein in its biomass and as it can probably overcome the hypersensitivity reactions - local or systemic presenting itself as erythema, swelling, heat, or subcutaneous nodules which is due to the external use of purer forms of porcine insulin. Another one of the major advantage is the low cost of the herbal source of insulin.
