The purpose of a professional book is the improvement of the practice of those who work in the field which it ex plores. The books to be issued in the American Education Series will, in every case, seek to meet this standard. The ground to be covered extends from the work of a teacher in a one-room rural school to that of a superintendent of schools in a large city or a commissioner of education in a great state. Scientific fields which contribute most largely to professional practice will be considered, as will also special problems connected with teaching practice. The history and philosophy of education will be interpreted, since they enable the teacher to understand better our modern educational practice and to work more efficiently because of his added understanding of the significance of his work as related to the society which he serves.
