It may be found also that I have dwelt with too much detail upon the coxcombry of manner, affected by our aspirants for the bays; but as it has often filled me with unutterable disgust, I really could not permit the opportunity to escape me, of exposing some of its ludicrous and offensive peculiarities. A similar feeling led me into the digression, at the expense of the unity of my plan, in which I have attempted to cast ridicule upon the furomania (pardon the etymology) which disgraces the taste of the day, and which I cannot help likening to the rage for melodramatic spectacle, which has superseded the more legitimate and intellectual entertainments of the stage.
