Excerpt from A Pocketful of Sixpences

Such being the pains and perils of Parliamentary life, how wise was the maternal solicitude of the Duchess of Bellamont in T aucrccl about her son Lord Montacute, when he was asked to stand for the County! The only part I don't like is his being kept up very late at the House, so I begged him to be very strict in making his servant always have coffee ready for him, very hot, and a cold fowl or something of the sort. Pitt, as everyone knows, made his Parliamentary supper on veal pie and port wine. Sir Robert Peel used to eat a curious little round custard-pudding, of a type which is still provided at the Refreshment Bar. Mr. Gladstone drank a cup of the strongest tea, and slept heroically under the in¿uence of that singular nightcap. But even to constitutions sedulously fortified the walk home after a late sitting has often proved perilous.
