Excerpt from The Life and Times of John Wilkes, M. P, Vol. 1 of 2: Lord Mayor of London, and Chamberlain

The prominent incidents of Wilkes's career are well known: his struggles with Ministers on the General Warrants, and his desperate contest with the House of Commons for his seat. He is familiar also as the noisy, successful demagogue, who was the cause of much turbulence and rioting. Not so well known is his share in the conflict which raged for many years between the King and his Ministers on the one side, and the City Fathers on the other, when the latter displayed an intrepidity and resolution that was worthy of all praise.
