Prebiotics have been used more recently for modulating colonic micro flora because they are non-expensive, can be incorporated in large variety of food items, can resist even harsh conditions of GI tract and elicit more changes as compared to probiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible ingredient which positively affects the host by selective stimulation of activity or growth of one or limited number of colonic bacteria thereby improving host health.

Fatima Syed did her MPhil thesis under supervision of Dr Naureen Naeem , on preparation of galacto-oligosaccharides in lactose and their influence on various biomarkers of colon carcinogenesis in male rats. In the present study galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) were found to be protective against the development of colon cancer
