1. Poor urban communities should be educated on the need to "Pay as You Generate Solid Waste" in order to pay for the solid waste collection service for a clean environment. 2. The urban vulnerable communities should be empowered with solid waste recycling technology in for the purpose of reducing solid waste while generating income through sale of recycled products as a poverty reduction strategy 3. Local urban governments should sort solid waste at source to enable poor communities recover items for re-use, recycling and compost formation for gardening. This reduces the cost of transporting wastes from the source to official dump sites for final disposal

About the author










The author is a Senior Lecturer in Geography employed by The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) since 2000. His academic background include; M.A. (Demography), 1994 and PhD in Geography, UDSM, 2009. He is a researcher with several publications in local and international journals; the Managing Editor of the African Resources Development Journal,OUT.
