Excerpt from The Speech on the Third Reading of the Bill for Preventing the Gold Coin of the Realm From Being Paid or Accepted for a Greater Value Than the Current Value of Such Coin, Commonly Called Lord Stanhope's Bill, Friday, the 19th of July, 1811
But I am reminded by the looks of my Ho nourable Friends, that this Act has a far more important operation, and that, by the words in the Bill, or other person liable to such distress, it is intended to exempt Bankers and other persons, who have issued one and two pound notes, under the 37th of the King, 0. 32, from the compulsive obligation to pay in money, contained in that law. I cannot believe this Act will be so construed.
