Excerpt from A Narrative of What Is Known Respecting the Literary Remains of the Late John Tweddell

Tion of my letters, it was in ignorance of his having any view or design of hostility either towards myself or towards Lord Elgin; and I was by no means prepared to expect that what I communicated to him in kindness and in confidence, for the pur pose of assisting him in the work he had undertaken, was to be employed as a text, upon which to accuse me before the public for scantiness of information and inaccuracy of recollection; not to mention other still more serious imputations. - At all events I think it would have been more candid on the part of Mr. Robert Tweddell, if his remarks to this effect had been communi cated to me previous to their publication and if an opportunity had been given me of explaining whatever might seem to re quire it.
