Excerpt from Excursions in Greece to Recently Explored Sites of Classical Interest

Its association with the romantic story of Schliemann enables the author to sketch that remarkable career, and in the later essays to deal with the discovery and not the discoverer. Otherwise the work would have been drawn out to an undue length. Yet in every case due honour is paid to the explorer of each site, whatever his nationality.

The probable date of the remains at Mycenae and the main results of the excavations are stated with a wise caution. Nowhere is the reader better prepared to form an independent judgment of a very difficult question. The approximative age, and the plan of the buildings on the Acropolis are not very difficult to grasp with the aid of the similar works at Tiryns. The problem which still awaits solution is the origin of the art, at once simple and advanced, which marks the structures of Mycenae, Tiryns, and Orchomenus. Two sources seem clear, one Asiatic, coming by land, and the other Egypto-Phoenician, coming by sea. As the products of these sources are intermixed, it is obvious that the date of either must direct us towards that of the other. It has not escaped M. Diehl that the tribute of the Kefca or Phoenicians to the Egyptian king Thothmes III. comprehends vases strikingly like those of Mycenae and other objects more analogous, as the bulls' heads of precious metal.
