Excerpt from The Good Merchant: A Discourse Occasioned by the Death of William Parsons, Delivered in the Church on Church Green, March 26, 1837

The subject of my discourse is The Character of the Good Merchant. It is my lot, it is my privilege, to address a congregation composed chie¿y of per sons actively engaged in the various branches of trade and commerce. My position, therefore, may serve to Justify, if it'do not seem to demand of me, the discussion of a topic which necessarily involves a consideration of the duties of this large and im portant class of the community. Let me first give some account of the rise and progress of this depart ment of industry, and detail some of the advantages and benefits which it has conferred upon the world.
