Excerpt from Memoirs of an Author, Vol. 1
'memoirs OF AN author' may seem a some what pretentious title; and the carper or cynic may hold that no one may properly dub himself author, anymore than he can dub himself knight. It will be seen, however, that I have used the convenient term 'writing man' through the book, though a glance at the list of some two hundred volumes, given at the end of the work - not in ostentation, but simply as a sort of feurio' might justify some claim to authorship. But quantity, alas! Is not exactly the same thing as quality.
