Excerpt from Introduction to the Treatment of Disease by Galvanism
When the old philosophers rubbed a piece of glass with silk, they said that the glass manifested vitreous electricity. Franklin called it Positive electricity. When they rubbed resinous things with ¿annel, or better, With the fur of a cat, they said that the resinous thing manifested resinous electricity. Franklin called this Negative electricity. The sets of phenomena are different, and by convention we adopt the words Positive to denote the first, and Negative to denote the second. It, then, merely becomes necessary to use the words consistently.
