Excerpt from Account of the Life and Writings of Thomas Brown, M. D: Late Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Edinburgh

Dr. Brown, I became acquainted with many of the events of his life, and had an opportunity of observing his habits of thinking and acting. I was aided also by information most liberally supplied by his relatives, to whom he had left the care of his manuscripts. Indeed the facilities they afforded, and the confidence they reposed in me, rendered my labours agreeable and comparatively easy. I derived particular advantage from a letter containing an ao count of his life, written by his sister, Miss Brown, whose lamented death pre vents me from having the gratification of making a public acknowledgment to her 2along with her sisters who survive, of the many obligations under which I have been laid by their friendship. For the valuable assistance afforded me by many of the other relatives and friends of Dr. Brown, I have to return my warmest thanks.
