The dialect belongs to the Eastern North Midland group, which embraces the whole Of South Yorkshire. Dr. Ellis (eepr. V. P. 364) distinguishes nine varieties: The Western group containing var. I. Huddersfield and var. 2. Halifax. The North Central group containing var. 3. Keighley, var. 4. Bradford, var. 5. Leeds, var. 6. Dewsbury. The South Central group containing var. 7. Rotherham and var. 8. Sheffield. The Eastern group containing var. 9. Doncaster and the Eastern slip.

Of these nine varieties the Windbill dialect is most closely related to numbers 3. 4. 5.
