Excerpt from The Opposite House: A Novel
Darkness had gathered in Frau Gertrude's old-fashioned chamber.
The rain pattered monotonously against the panes of the lofty window and trickled in heavy drops down to the sill. The flickering light of the street lamps cast an uncertain glimmer upon the ancient mansion, whose stone entrance-posts had seen numerous generations of the honored family of merchants pass in and out of the vaulted doorway.
