Weaning period lies between the age of 4 months and 1 year where the breast feeding by the mother is almost withdrawn. This period requires the adequate supply of nutrition to meet the increasing demand for energy, protein and micronutrient by growing infant. Failure to meet the demands may lead to malnutrition and even mortality. This concerns the development of weaning food which must be rich in protein, energy and micronutrients with high dietary bulk along with high digestibility and bioavailability. This monograph comprises of five chapters which followed an orderly information on child nutrition, malnutrition, weaning food, processing aspects of weaning food and case study. This document can serve as an informative literature for better understanding of weaning food and developmental methodologies. The presented results may be beneficial for students and researchers working in the development of weaning food at academic institutions, R&D organizations and food industries.

Ms. Sneha Sehwag is Senior Research Fellow in Agricultural and Food Engineering Department, IIT Kharagpur, India. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology. She is a post-graduate in Food Technology from CFTRI, Mysore, India. Her broad area of research primarily lay in the field of functional food development.
