From 1869 to 1870 Karl Koldewey was captain of the Germania and the leader of the second German Arctic expedition to Greenland and to the Arctic Sea which intended to penetrate into the Arctic central region. The actual highlight and most considerable geographical achievement of the expedition was the discovery and investigation of the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Fjord.
This book is a reprint of the famous original which was first published in 1874.

About the author

Carl Koldewey (1837 - 1908) wurde in Brücken bei Hoya als Sohn eines Kaufmanns geboren. Er besuchte die Seefahrtschule in Bremen, wurde Kapitän und studierte u.a. Mathematik, Astronomie und Physik in Hannover. 1868 leitete er die Erste Deutsche Arktisexpedition, die er aufgrund witterungsbedingter Hindernisse vorzeitig abbrechen musste. Von 1869 - 1870 unternahm er als Kapitän der Germania die Zweite Deutsche Nordpolarfahrt. Koldewey begann als erster die Nordpolarregion systematisch zu erforschen. Nach seinen Expeditionen verfasste er diverse wissenschaftliche Publikationen.
