Depression is a common serious mental illness with major health, economic, and social consequences. Therefore, the current study was designed to investigate the potential role of some hormones (melatonin, dehydroepiandrosterone, vitamin D plus calcium) in management of depression in the experimental model. Our results provided a clear evidence for the potential role of the studied hormones as antidepressant agents in rat model of depression. The ability of these hormones to activate the serotonergic and dopaminergic system and to suppress hypothalamopituitary-adrenal axis beside the immunomodulatory, antiinflammatory, neurotrophic and antipoptic effects of the selected hormones play a key role in their therapeutic potential. Thus, these compounds hold great promise for use in the treatment of depression.
