Description

Digha is located at the border West Bengal and Orissa state of India. It has both fresh and saline water-bodies rich in aquatic vegetation and harbours several kinds of birds in all the seasons. Grassland areas, rice fields, herbs, shrubs and trees located in and around the water bodies provide food and shelter for these birds. More than 80 bird species belonging 10 orders (Passeriformes being the dominant) and 35 families were recorded during our 2 yearlong study period. The future of this avian fauna is in danger due to the unabated growth of tourism industry. The potential of Digha as a marine conservation site, mainly for birds, may enhance its value both in terms of biodiversity preservation as well as in eco-tourism.
