Over the years with the expansion of paint industries, the exposure to organic solvents has increased tremendously. Workers in these industries face a potential risk because of the widespread industrial use of solvents like benzene, toluene and xylene. Even the common man is exposed to solvents from aerosol propellants, paints, thinners, cleaners and fumigants but despite this widespread use of organic solvents, very few reports have described their combined toxic effects on vital functions. The toxic effects of human exposure to organic solvents, in mixed form at varied dose levels, have been explained here. This has special relevance to Gujarat State, which has shown rapid industrialization and an expanding paint manufacturing industry in recent times. The observations described in this book therefore hold significance in helping to create awareness regarding the detrimental effects of inhalation of solvent vapors and could lead to positive steps for regulations to implement protective measures.
