The World Health Organisation has underlined that developed countries and emerging economies must join forces to support research into new drugs for neglected diseases. Unfortunately, it has been found that there are only 3.8% of drugs which have been approved between 2000 and 2011 for neglected diseases. Besides, only 1.4 per cent of total clinical studies are dedicated to neglected diseases yet they make up 11 % of the global disease burden. Among the neglected diseases are: sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis and Chagas disease, malaria, tuberculosis, Trachoma, AIDS, Filiarasis and Leprosis. The United Nations have said that dengue, river blindness and guinea-worm disease are also among the 17 neglected tropical diseases which are now targeted by a new global strategy.
