Man is the vital safety resource in our high-tech world: he prevents more accidents than he causes. Also, for operating complex plants we cannot do without him. Yet, he is only able to fully perform his abilities when he is of sound mind, otherwise he might himself become a risk factor.
(Today) Drug use is a serious social - and for companies also a safety-relevant - pro-blem which can have negative impact on the environment and also on other people's health äs we do not only encounter it in recreational activities and road traffic but also in everyday work life.
Just äs drugs play an important role in society, they also do so in the plants. Thus, the employer is assigned the additional task of recognizing drug-related safety issues and to eliminate them. Police and the judiciary can only assist but cannot solve the social problem.
In particular when performing safety-relevant driving, controlling and supervisory activities, drug-related mistakes cannot only endanger the employee but also, in spite of all effective safety regulations, health and life of third parties, the environment and high-value material goods.
Supervisors, who äs part of their executive function are not least responsible for ensuring the safe Operation of all plants, face the whole ränge of human behavior including drug and alcohol consumption.
For Companies, dangers resulting from consumption of illicit drugs are a hardly identifiable risk äs there is hardly reliable visible evidence that proves drug consumption without any doubt and facilitates an Intervention. Thus, it is all the more important to tackle the problem pragmatically and in a constructive way. It is essential to create an internal atmosphere in the plant that allows for identifying potential risk persons to begin with. At the same time, corresponding solutions have to be developed, which, within the given legal framework, ensure that the problem is understood and solved in a way that is socially responsible and protects the company's safety interests.
For this purpose, this brochure is to offer help from various aspects by addressing the complex topic"Risk Person - At what point does someone become a risk for himself and others and how to handle it"
