Die vorliegende Sammlung erläutert exemplarisch die Geschichte der Erzählkunst vor dem Roman beziehungsweise vor dem 18. Jahrhundert und betrachtet die Vielzahl vorhandener Erzählformen hinsichtlich verschiedener theoretischer und methodischer Ansätze. Statt um eine übereinstimmende Begriffsbildung geht es hierbei insbesondere um das Aufzeigen traditioneller wissenschaftlicher Ansätze sowie zeitgenössischer kritischer Methoden im Bereich der Erzählkunst. Die Beiträge behandeln verschiedene Literaturgattungen, wie beispielsweise Epen, Sagen und Balladen, anhand derer Aspekte der mündlichen Dichtung und Überlieferung von Texten sowie damit in Zusammenhang stehende soziokulturelle Gesichtspunkte diskutiert werden.
